Wisk Evtol and small drone operator

From rapidly evolving drone technologies that are being integrated across a spectrum of industries to upcoming electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) vehicles that will soon relieve road congestion and fly people within urban environments, San Antonio is on the leading edge in adopting, innovating and delivering training programs in the new generation of air transportation.

On May 3 the Boeing Center at Tech Port will offer a free community showcase where the public can learn more about and meet some of the changemakers who are helping write the next chapters in air transportation alongside the next generations of industry talent.

Four leading voices will conduct a conversation highlighting the current state of eVTOL technology,  how the regulatory environment is being developed, and the importance of acting now for industry and educators to collaborate to ensure the necessary talent pipeline. From operators and engineers to cybersecurity, AI and an array of other disciplines, the adoption and scaling of the “flying taxis” that in the near future will be an everyday sight in the skies over America’s communities will require a diversity of well-prepared professionals, and San Antonio has all the necessary elements right now to lead by example.

Watch one of the largest-ever drone competitions featuring nearly 300 middle and high school students at the Boeing Center Arena.

The Dee Howard Foundation, a San Antonio nonprofit committed to providing educational programs that inspire and prepare the new generations of aviation and aerospace talent, recently launched a new educational curriculum that has connected with students across seven area school districts.

Made possible thanks to a $150,000 gift from the Port-affiliated Kelly Heritage Foundation, the program by Iconic Drone Education has introduced students to the new technology, including building, maintenance and proper operation of drones.

Along the way, students are also learning about the many industries incorporating drones as part of their operations—including energy, supply-chains and defense—and the different career opportunities being created.

Of great importance, students also learn about applicable laws and best practices to safely operate drones and obtain their corresponding operator’s permit from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
